Types of the disease

Pleural: This variation of the disease attacks the longs and the body's respiratory areas. The malignant cancer attacks the cells and the lining (known as the pleura) of the lungs and ribs.
Mesothelioma cells Peritoneal: This form of the cancer disease attacks the lining of the abdomen. This type of cancer is caused by asbestos exposuring, and it affects the lining that protects the contents of the abdomen which also provides a lubricating fluid to enable the organs moving and working properly.

The Asbestos Factor

Working with asbestos (which is fireproof material) is the major risk factor of the mesothelioma. A history of asbestos exposure at work is reported by 70-80 percents of the patients. Still, the illnewss has been reported in some individual cases, which there wasn't any exposure to asbestos.

The Symptoms

The symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until 30-50 years after exposure to asbestos. Shortness of breathing and pain in the chest are common symptoms of pleural mesothelioma, and happend due to accumulation of fluid in the pleura. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and abdominal pain and swelling due to a buildup of fluid in the abdomen. Other symptoms of the peritoneal form may include bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia, and fever. If the cancer has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body, symptoms may include pain, trouble swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face.

The Treatment

The treatment for the mesothelioma depends the cancer location, the stage of the sickness and the patient age and his/her general health. Options for a standart treatment include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. These treatments are often combined.
